Ali revered the building of post office as a pilgrim reveres the holiest shrine of his religious building. Going to this building was the chief purpose of his existence. It was this purpose that was keeping him alive. He went to the post office everyday in the hope of receiving a letter from his daughter, Miriam. The officials of the post office have been presented as very insensitive, apathetic and unsympathetic individuals have who noticed Ali coming to the post office every morning at dawn but never bothered to find out the reason behind his unusual behavior. On the contrary, they referred to him as a “madman” and cracked jokes at his expense, teased him by calling out his name just to see the expression of relief and happiness on his face, only to be fooled and let down.
