Using geologic maps, they looked for a place in the world with rocks of the correct age that had been deposited in the correct environment. There were not many places, and the easiest place to explore was in the north part of Canada on Ellesmere Island. They went there, dug a shaft, and discovered the fossil exactly as the evolutionary theory predicted it should be. This discovery did not cause the theory of evolution to need modification. Rather, it provided evidence that the theory was working as a predictive tool and, for now, was to be trusted until future evidence prompted change.
