The prime minister is by the Lok Sabha and is the head of Government. He is not directly elected by the voters. Loksabha members are directly elected by the people of India and the party holding a majority in the Lok Sabha elects its leader as the prime minister of India.
The Prime Minster can be any Member of the Parliament who enjoys the support of more than 50% of the Lok Sabha members. Currently Lok Sabha has 272 members. After proving the majority, the PM can appoint a council of ministers to assist him.
