Nitrification. Nitrifying bacteria in the soil convert ammonia into nitrite (NO2-) and then into nitrate (NO3-). This process is called nitrification. Compounds such as nitrate, nitrite, ammonia and ammonium can be taken up from soils by plants and then used in the formation of plant and animal proteins.

1) the bacteria breakdown dead remains of plants and animals releasing ammonium compounds in soil. This is known as ammonification.

2) the bacteria changes ammonia into nitrates. This is known as nitrification.

3) Bacteria like  Azotobacter are found in soil, they change nitrogen into nitrates and later plants take up the nitrates into their roots. These bacteria are called nitrogen-fixing bacteria.

4) the high temperature of lightning discharge causes some of nitrogen and oxygen in air to combine and form oxides of nitrogen. These oxides in rain are washed into soil as acids, where they form nitrates. This is called lightning.
