To FinD :-

  • How does the rays bend when it travels from denser to rarer medium .

AnsweR :-

The light is travelling from the denser to the rarer medium . If the light passes from denser to rarer medium the light bends away from the normal. This can be proved with the help of Snell's Law .

Here let the refractive index of the denser medium be \sf \mu_1 and that of the rarer medium be \sf \mu_1 . And here \sf \mu_1 > \mu_2 . Then , on using Snell's Law ,

\sf:\implies \pink{\dfrac{sin\ i }{sin \ r}=\dfrac{\mu_2}{\mu_1} }\\\\\sf:\implies \dfrac{sin\ i }{sin \ r}=\dfrac{\mu_2}{\mu_2}<1 \qquad \bigg\lgroup \red{\bf As \ , \mu_1 > \mu_2}\bigg\rgroup \\\\\sf:\implies sin \ i < sin \ r \\\\\sf:\implies\boxed{\pink{\frak{ \angle i < \angle r }}}

\underline{\blue{\textsf{ Hence the light ray will bend \textbf{ away from the normal}.}}}
