Social Reformers fought for the upliftment of women during British era
Raja Ram Mohan Roy was known for his efforts to abolish the practices ofsati. His efforts were fruitful as sati was finally abolished in 1829.
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was the most prominent campaigner for widow remarriage and petitioned for it despite severe opposition from others. In 1856 the widow remarriage act was passed.
Sir Syed Ahmed Khan devoted his scholarly legal work in the field of civil rights for women. Act of 1866 (empowerment of women) could not have been passed without the legal scholarly help that he extended to the bill.
