propagation of sound needs a medium to travel. the source of sound Crete's a disturbance in the medium which travels through the medium. the particles of the medium do not move forward but the disturbance is carried forward. this is propagation of sound in a medium, hence sound can be seen as a wave.

Sound propagates through the medium in form of alternate compressions and rarefractions.when a vibrating moving object like an arm of tuning fork moves forward it pushes and compress the air in front creating a region of high pressure (compressions) when an arm of tuning fork moving backward, creating of a region of low pressure (rarefactions).
