Chola temples were built by ancient ruler with the aid of expect architects, it was not only to create an abode for the Idols of gods for worship, but also had a provision secret tunnel and connectivity with the fort as the safe route to escape of the Royals and their families from the forts and enemies during the time of wars.
More often it act as a safe deposit value for the wealth of Royals who used the wealth for the welfare of their subject.

The present day temples are reconstruction and/or expansion of encient temples and most of them are managed by the Goverment few are managed by Independant trusts like "Tirupathi Balaji Temple at Tirupathi at A.P. Shri Saibaba Temple at Shirdi, Shri Siddhi Vinayak Temple at Mumbai,etc. and the income from the trusts are used for meanly welfare measures.
