How the tense changed in the direct keported speech to indirect
Answers
Answer:
Hey there!
While converting from direct to indirect speech, the following tense changes will take place:-
1) Simple present becomes simple past
For example:-
Amelia said, " Lilly drinks a smoothie every morning".
Changing it to indirect, we get:-
Amelia said that Lilly drank a smoothie every morning.
Here drinks was in simple present but while converting to indirect, it became 'drank' which is in simple past!
2) Future tenses become conditional
Example:-
Michael said, "I will be in New York on Monday",
This in indirect would be:-
Michael said that he would be in New York on Monday.
3) Present continuous becomes past continuous
"I am reading a book", he explained.
He explained that he was reading a book
4) Present perfect becomes past perfect
"I have been to Greece", he told me.
He told me that he had been to Greece.
5) commands become infinitive.
For example :- Rachel said "Come here" will change to Rachel said to come here. 'come' was the command...but while converting it to indirect, it became 'to come'. to come is an infinitive.
6) Simple past becomes past perfect
Jane said, "He came here yesterday."
Jane said that he had come here yesterday.
7) Future continuous become Conditional continuous
She said, "I'll be using your Nintendo next Friday".
She said that she would be using the Nintendo next Friday.
