The Tamil speaking community was demanding equal rights however these demands were always denied by the sinhala community. After being denied equal rights numerous times the Tamil community formed many political organizations and began asking for an independent Tamil Elam in 1980's. But soon the distrust between the two communities turned into a conflict and later into a civil war. This civil war led to the death of thousands of people in both communities. the civil war however ended in the year 2009.
