In vascular plants, the secondary growth occurs due to a series of activities carried out by the lateral meristems.

There are two types of lateral meristems.

They are vascular cambium and the cork cambium.

Vascular cambium contains xylem and phloem.

It is helpful in dividing and multiplying of cells in the plant.
