The construction of the Tawa Dam had led to the submerging of large areas of agricultural & forest land. In 1994 , the government bestowed on private businessmen the privileges to fishing in the Tawa reservoir. These contractors have driven local people away in order to obtain cheap labour. The villagers united at this point and decided to establish an organization to protect their rights. This led to Tawa Matsya Sangh being founded

Explanation:

  • The government set up a committee to examine the issue in response to the demands of the TMS. The committee suggested that fishing privileges for their livelihood would be accorded to villagers. Therefore the government of Madhya Pradesh agreed in 1996 to grant the displaced people the reservoir rights.
  • On the first day of January, the villagers of 33 villages started their new year with their first capture, and two months later they signed a five-year lease agreement.
  • TMS framed a cooperative that had bought fish from the fishermen at a fair price from the fishermen. The cooperative also arranged a fair price for the transportation and sale of fish. TMS was successfully was able to eliminate all sorts of contractors & middlemen between the markets & the fishermen, hence passing the benefits directly  them. This led to a triple increase in fishermen 's earnings. The TMS also began to give fishermen loans to repair nets and buy new nets.
