When we look at our past, we can observe that the Personal identity like religion, caste, cult or race has brought more of the sorrows than happiness in one's life. Religion has been in one way or another a reason of conflict since antiquity be it a fight between Vedic Aryans and non-vedic Dasyus or Nordic pagans vs Latin Christians or Jews vs Egyptian pharaohs or the holy war between Islam and Roman Catholics and many more.

When the second urbanisation started in around 5th century BC, with the rise of large States in Indian subcontinent, people owned strong allegiance to the “JANAPAD or the territory” to which they belonged rather than to their cult/tribe. But in the 21st century, we are more concerned about our personal beliefs rather than paying allegiance to the territorial integrity. This has led to intra-territorial conflicts all over the world be it:

Persecution of ROHINGYA Muslims in Burma

Israel's apartheid policies against Palestinians

Christian- Muslim strife in Nigeria and Central African Republic.

Countless Shia-Sunni conflict in West Asian countries.

Killing and Exodus of minorities in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Theory of superiority of blood in India and resulting inter- caste conflicts.

In the long term, we can hope that Religion will change the nature of the man and reduce conflict. But history is not encouraging in this respect. The bloodiest of wars has been fought in the name of Religion. Today, religion has become a commodity which is being harnessed to mobilize people and gain power.
