introduction

Current is the flow of electrons in a circuit. It is measured in amperes (amps, A). An ammeter is used to measure current. Conventional current states that current flows from the positive terminal of the battery to the negative terminal in the battery. Current will always take the path of least resistance and there must be a complete circuit in order to allow current to flow. In a series circuit there is only 'one path' for the current to flow. In this exercise we shall investigate how that affects the brightness of the lamps.

Task 1

Model 1

Open Yenka file Model 1.

Close the SPST switch A in the circuit and describe what happens.

Answer

Interact with the model and add two more lamps to the circuit. What observation can you make?

Answer

Why do you think this happens?

Answer

Delete one of the lamps and describe what happens.

Answer

Using Yenka, draw a circuit using the correct symbols to demonstrate the above two circuits.

Answer

Summary

In a series circuit there is only one path for the current to flow. Voltage splits in a series circuit.
