How to actually identify phrases and clauses?? i cant get the defination given in the study material.

A clause is a group of words that has both a subject and a predicate. An independent clause can stand on its own as a sentence. A dependent clause cannot. 
A phrase is a group of words that lacks either a subject, a predicate, or both.
