The rules for adding vectors are conveniently described by graphical methods. To add vector B to vector A, first draw vector A on graph paper, with its magnitude represented by a convenient length scale, and then draw vector B to the same scale with its tail starting from the tip of A, as shown in Figure 3.6. The resultant vector R " A % B is the vector drawn from the tail of A to the tip of B.

A vector is a directed line segment. It means that it has magnitude as well as direction.

If two vectors are represented in magnitude and direction by two sides of a triangle taken order, then their resultant (viz.,their addition) is represented in magnitude by the third side of the triangle but in opposite direction.

i.e., if the AB and BC represent two vectors along the sides AB and BC of the triangle ABC in magnitude and direction, then AC represents in magnitude and direction the the addition vector AB+BC along the side AC and we write AB+BC = AC
