usually, in the word problems of proportions, there is at least one variable.
you can solve it by two methods:-
1) example - a tree of length 5 metres makes a shadow of 15 metres a building makes a shadow of 75 metres. find the height of the building - the given proportion can be stated as under
5:15::x:75
=>5÷15=x÷75
=>x=5÷15×75= 25
therefore, the height of the building is 25metres
2)this method is similar to the first method but it includes another step
taking the same example, we have :-
5:15::x:75
here, multiply means on one side of the equation and the extremes on the other
=>5×75=15x
=>x=25
there are many more different types of questions like finding the missing quantities in a proportion. for example find the value of x in the continued proportion of 3,x,15
then it will be written as 2:x::x:50
=>x²=2×50=100
=>x=root100=10
