The secondary valence is the number of ions of molecules that are coordinated to the metal ion. The secondary valency is also called the coordination number. Secondary valencies may be satisfied by negative ions or neutral molecules. Example: In [Pt(NH3)6]Cl4 , the secondary valency of Pt is 6 since Pt is coordinated to 6 ammonia molecules.
