A equation is said to be a balanced equation when the atoms of each element are equal on both sides i.e RHS and LHS.
e.g Mg+O2 --- Mgo, this is an unbalanced equation as oxygen
atom in LHS is 2 but in RHS is 1
So,to balance this equation multiply 2 in RHS now O has 2 atoms in RHS and O has 2 atoms in LHS ,O is balanced but now Mg is unbalanced as Mg has 1 atom in LHS but 2 atoms in RHS I.e Mg+O2---2Mgo
So to balance Mg multiply 2 in LHS (Mg) i.e 2Mg+O2---2Mgo Now it is balanced.
