let the equation be Mg + O2 --> MgO

here, on the product side there is only one O while in reactant there is two so multiply MgO by 2

therefore, Mg +O2--> 2MgO

now, on reactant side Mg is 1 while on product it is 2

so multiply Mg by 2

then, the balanced equation will be

2Mg + O2 --> 2MgO
