Answer: By breaking down the number of atoms of each element on both the LHS and the RHS.

Explanation: For example :

To balance H2 + O2 = H20

Step 1 : As oxygen has lesser atoms on the RHS, we will change it to 2. And hence write the number 2 in front of H20.

                      LHS              RHS

                    H - 2               H - 2

                    O - 2               O - 1 (strikethrough)    2

H2 + O2 = 2 H20 ( meaning 2 molecules of H2O )

Step 2 : Now as there are 2 molecules of H2O, the number of hydrogen atoms on the RHS will change to become 4 atoms ( as we multiply the number of molecules to the number of atoms ). Now we have to change the number of hydrogen atoms on the LHS, to balance the equation.

                    LHS                                          RHS

                   H - 2 (strikethrough) 4             H - 4

                   O - 2                                         O - 2

Thus the final answer will be 2 H2 + O2 = 2 H2O

Hope this answer helped.
