The following are required to be a successful stenographers:

=> It is the basic requirement that you are thorough with the fundamentals of English, like: grammar, sentence construction rules, punctuation, usage of phrases and clauses, etc. This will prevent committing the basic mistakes in English, that may not be related to the stenography.

=> One should continuously update oneself with new vocabulary. Reading a standard newspaper would help. You may read the news items in full.

=> One should be constantly aware of changes in technology, the industry to which he is attached to, the specific slang and accent of the person or persons regularly giving dictation to him or her.

=>One should try to improve speed, by taking dictations for practice from known circles.
Ask for opinions and suggestions from the persons giving dictations.
