Let me first tell you some general points regarding the equilibrium/null point of a system of two point charges :
For a two point-charge system, there cannot be more than one real equilibrium position.
If there exists a real equilibrium position it must lie on the straight line connecting the two point charges.
If the two charges are of same nature, there will be a unique equilibrium point which will lie in between the charges.
If the two charges are of different nature, equilibrium point (if any) will not lie in between the charges.
Equilibrium point (if any) always lies closer to the smaller amount charge.
Now as far as the situation given in the problem is concerned, keeping the above mentioned points in mind, you can self conclude the following result:
If the two charges are equal in magnitude but opposite in sign, there will not exist any real equilibrium point. In other words, the equilibrium position will be at infinite distance from either of the charges.
