Explanation:

Gaining ratio of a partner is

New sharing ratio - old sharing ratio.

Retiring partner's share x Acquisition

Example :-

A and B and c sharing partners in ration 3:2:2. C retired and New profit sharing ratio of A and B is 1:1.

Gaining ration of A is

 \frac{1}{2}  -  \frac{3}{7}  =  \frac{7 - 6}{14}  =  \frac{1}{14}

Gaining ratio of B is

 \frac{1}{2}  -  \frac{2}{7}  =  \frac{7 - 4}{14}  =  \frac{3}{14}

Therefore gaining ratio is

 \frac{1}{14}  \div  \frac{3}{14}  =

1:3
