once u calculate the hybridization of the ion, u get to know the basic geometry of the ion.
Then u allott the lone pairs and bonds to each hybrid orbital and with a bit of visualization, u get the approximate structure
For eg: in H2O, the hybridization of O is sp³
U know that there are 2 bond pairs and 2 lone pairs, so u allott 2 hybrid orbitals to lps and 2 to bps. and with a bit of visualization,u can see how the tetrahedral geometry gives rise to a bent shape
Basically u have to remember the basic backbone structure for each kind of hybridization
