How to calculate the number of pi bonds in a compound ?

First you find the number of valence electrons for your compound, and draw a Lewis Dot structure. Once you have done so, calculate the formal charges on each atom, and see if you have to add double or triple bondsanywhere in the compound to minimize formal charge
