Dear student,

To calculate the number of sigma bonds

Step 1 > Write the formula of the compound given.

Step 2 > Write the structural formula of the compound.

Step 3 > Fill the bonds with the required number of atoms to be bonded, for organic compounds, fill with hydrogen.

Step 4 > Note that all the bonds are complete and the structural formula is correct.

Step 5 > Count the first bond attached to every atom.

Step 6 > This will result the number of sigma bonds. Note that saturated compounds, all the bonds could be counted as sigma bond but for unsaturated compounds, only the first bond or one bond of any multi bond is counted for sigma bonds.

To calculate the number of Pi bonds

(Repeat step 1 to step 4 as above)

Step 5 > Count from the second bond after sigma bond between two atoms possessing multi bonds. Pi bonds could be found only in unsaturated compounds.
