Let Mg=x
x+(-1*2)=0
x-2=0
x=2

raminder1: like u can also think to calculate oci no of Mg
raminder1: why you dnt calculated oxi no. of magnesium by taking oxi no. of nitrogen as -3
samya4: Ya u can do it with Mg too
raminder1: plz do with that
raminder1: i want that solution
raminder1: plz doo
samya4: Let Mg =x. =>x+(-1*2)=0. =>x=2
samya4: X+(-1+2)=0
raminder1: not got it can you edit your answer please
samya4: X=2

Explanation:

Standard oxidation numbers of some elements are known. For example, Mg = +2 and O = -2. Use “x” for the unknown oxidation number; in this case N.

So,

1(2) + 2(x) + 6(-2) = 0

then solve for x.

2 + 2x -12 = 0

2x - 10 = 0

2x = 10

x = 5

Thus, the oxidation number of N is +5. The convention is to write the sign of the charge, followed by its value.
