For Iron this method will not apply .
Oxidation state depends on the valecy electrons and the valecy electrons are electrons present in the outer most layer of an atom.
For , Fe, n=4 N shell
i.e iron has valecy of 2.
Zinc: For Zinc , we will do 2+8=10
10+18=28
And the remaining electron , it will give to some body else
So valecy of Zinc is 2
