It's either dissociation or association of a molecule.
If a molecule dissociates the vant Hoff factor (i) i>1
If a molecule associates then i<1.
For MgSO4 and all ionic compounds i is always greater than one theoretically, else it depends on degree of dissociation experimentally.
MgSO4----> Mg(2+) + SO4(2-)
The vant Hoff factor for MgSO4 is 2 as it dissociates completely into two ions.
Likewise for BaCl2
BaCl2----> Ba(2+) + 2Cl(1-)
So vant Hoff factor for BaCl2 is 3 as it dissociates to three ions.
Numbers in brackets indicates charge of the ion
Likewise for association,
Acetic acid in benzene
It dimerizes in benzene
CH3COOH----> (CH3COOH)2
vant Hoff factor for acetic acid is half which is less than one.
I hope I gave right answer.
