Having the atomic number 6, every carbon atom has a total of six electrons. Two are in a completed inner orbit, while the other four are valance electrons—outer electrons that are available for forming bonds with other atoms.

Carbon has atomic no. 6. So its inner orbit has 2 electrons and that of outer has 4 electrons. Now from octet rule we know that there should be 8 electrons in the second orbit to become stable. So it will further react with other elements or make bond with other elements to become stable...This is how carbon compound is made...
Hope it will help u.
