Hi there!
It seems a Nice Question :)
QUERY :
How to check whether a given situational Math problem should be solved using 'Linear Equations in Two Variables' or 'Quadratic Equations' ?
■ LINEAR EQN. ARE USED WHEN :
The 2 situations are given in the Question to show a Single case we use there Linear Eqn. in two variable.
■ QUADRATIC EQN. IS USED WHEN :
Single case is showed by 2 situation & these 2 situation are Interrelated we use there Quadratic Eqn.
Hope it helps! :D

There is a simple technique for this.
If two different thing are asked in the question ,then it is a two variable. But the value of those two things must be different.
If a single thing is asked in a question, then it is a one variable.
