hey friend your answer.

nitrite is a polyatomic ion with a charge of -1. Oxygen is more reliable in the charge of its ion, so with 2 oxygen atoms in the nitrite ion, oxygen contributes -4 to the overall charge. Since the overall charge is -1, the nitrogen must have a charge (valence state) of +3. This instance is how oxidation states are determined when solving (balancing) redox reactions.

hope it helpful .
