In phenol, the phenyl ring has one −OH−OH functional group. The oxygen of this −OH−OH can participate in the conjugation, and is sp2sp2-hybridised. The Csp2−OHCsp2−OH bond, thus, has a partial double bond character, and the oxygen has a partial positive character. This tends to decrease the basicity of the lone pair(s) on the OO of the −OH−OH group.

In p-aminophenol, the phenyl has has one −OH−OH group and a −NH2−NH2 group oriented para to one another. Both the groups can contribute to the conjugation, and affect the same carbon atoms.
