Steps to convert
1. Phenol to salicylic acid:
- Phenol is made to react in the presence of NaOH as a catalyst, and it leads to sodium phenoxide.
- Sodium phenoxide is made to react with carbon dioxide at 4-7 atm and 200K, it leads to the formation of sodium salicylate.
- When the obtained product is hydrolyzed, it leads to the formation of salicylic acid.
- The reaction involved is given in the attachment.
2. Methyl cyanide to ethanol:
- Methyl cyanide is hydrogenated in the presence of sodium metal and ethanol.
- This leads to the formation of compound called ethyl amine. When this is made to react with HCl, it yields an intermediate substance which with the addition of water gets converted into ethanol.
- The reaction involved is given in the attachment.
3. Distinguish 1 - butanol from 2- butanol with the help of copper
- The main principle involved is that different classes of alcohol give different products when their vapors are passed over heated copper at 573K.
- Primary alcohol such as 1-butanol, in the presence of copper, undergo dehydrogenation and yields aldehydes.
- Secondary alcohol such as 2-butanol, in the presence of copper, undergoes dehydrogenation and yields ketones.
