In order to convert fractional ratio into whole number ratio, we follow the following steps:
Step I: Find the least common multiple (L. C. M.) of the denominators.
Step II: Multiply each term of the ratio by this least common multiple (L. C. M.).
Step III: Then simplify it.
Solved examples on conversion of fractional ratio into whole number ratio:
1. Convert 1/3 : 1/4 into whole number ratio i.e., to ratio in simple form.
Solution:
1/3 : 1/4
First we need to find the least common multiple (L. C. M.) of the denominators 3 and 4 of the given ratio 1/3 : 1/4. The least common multiple (L. C. M.) of the denominators 3 and 4 = 12
Now we need to multiply each term of the ratio by this least common multiple 12.
= (1/3) × 12 : (1/4) × 12
= 12/3 : 12/4
= 4 : 3
Note: If each term of a ratio multiplied or divided by the same number or same quantity, the ratio remains the same.
In another alternative method we can convert 1/3 : 1/4 as,
= 1/3 ÷ 1/4, [Dividing first quantity by the second quantity]
= (1/3) × (4/1)
= 4/3
= 4 : 3
2. Convert 9/7 : 8/3 into whole number ratio i.e., to ratio in simple form.
Solution:
9/7 : 8/3
First we need to find the least common multiple (L. C. M.) of the denominators 7 and 3 of the given ratio 9/7 : 8/3. The least common multiple (L. C. M.) of the denominators 7 and 3 = 21
Now we need to multiply each term of the ratio by this least common multiple 21.
= (9/7) × 21 : (8/3) × 21
= 189/7 : 168/3
= 27 : 56
In another alternative method we can convert 9/7 : 8/3 as,
= 9/7 ÷ 8/3, [Dividing first quantity by the second quantity]
= (9/7) × (3/8)
= 27/56
= 27 : 56
