To convert acetone to tertiary butyl alcohol the following steps needs to be taken:
a) Acetone is first reacted with Grignard Reagent (Methyl Magnesium Bromide). It undergoes coupling reaction to form methyl oxy- magnesium bromide.
b) This intermediate product is made to undergo hydrolysis to ultimately form tertiary butyl alcohol.
Acetone is mostly used as a volatile solvent in majority of the “paints and varnishes” in the market. ‘Tert Butyl alcohol’ or ‘tertiary butyl alcohol’ is used as an alcohol base in perfumery.
