how to convert benzene into Ethane

Explanation:

As acetylene (ethyne) is an endothermic compound and benzene is an exothermic compound it will be very hard to convert benzene into acetylene in a single step. I know that if acetylene is passed through a hot nickel tube that it is converted into benzene.

I think that the route suggested by Rajeev Sharma would work, but the yield would be low and the cost of the synthesis would be high. The only use I can see for this would be to convert C14 labelled benzene into radioactive acetylene. It so happens that the radio of radioylsis is much lower for most compounds when they are dissolved in benzene. If you have a C14 labeled organic compound then if you store it as a pure solid / liquid then it can start to decompose as a result of autoradiolysis. One method of slowing this down is to dissolve it in benzene.
