This conversion takes place in following steps.

# Step 1 -
Bromobenzene on reaction with magnesium in presence of dry ether gives phenyl magnesium bromide.
C6H5-Br ---> C6H5-Mg-Br

# Step 2 -
Phenyl magnesium bromide on further reaction with acetaldehyde follwed by that with water gives 1-phenylethanol.
C6H5-Mg-Br ---> C6H5-CH(CH3)-OH
