Explanation:

step 1->

CH3-Br + Mg -------> CH3MgBr (bromomethane) (dry ether).

step 2->

CH3-CHO

CH3MgBr + -------------->. CH3-CH-CH3

H3O+. |

OH

(propan-2-ol)

step 3->

PCC

CH3-CH-CH3 -----------> CH3-C-CH3

|. Cu(250°C) ||

OH. O

(propanone)

when bromomethane (CH3-Br) is reacted with magnesium metal (Mg) in presence of anhydrous ether, it forms methyl magnesium bromide (CH3MgBr).

and when methyl magnesium bromide is reacted with acetaldehyde (CH3-CHO) followed by hydrolysis (H3O+) , it forms propan-2-ol.

after this propan-2-ol is oxidised in the presence of PCC or using copper metal at 250°C , therefore forming propan-2-one.

hope it helps you
