First you would use O3 with H2O to form two equivs of acetaldehyde...from here all you have to do is reduce to ethanol using things like LiAlH4, NaBH4, DIBAl--H, H2 w/ Pd/C, or LiAlH[OC(CH3)3]3.

But-2-ene to ethanol conversion

  1. The given product for the conversion is But-2-ene (CH_3-CH=CH-CH_3) which is an alkene, whereas the expected product is Ethanol (C_2H_5OH) and it is an alcohol.
  2. The general principle used in this concept is that hydration of alkenes leads to the formation of alcohol.
  3. The mechanism called Markovnikov reaction is applied to convert to But-2-ene to Ethanol.
  4. Accordingly when But-2-ene is treated with water in the presence of H_2SO_4 or H_3PO_4 as H^+ ion donor, leads to the addition of water to the double bonded carbon atom.
  5. Due to this mechanism, the substance called  ethanol is formed and the reaction involved in the conversion process is as follows:

\mathrm{CH}_{3}-\mathrm{CH}=\mathrm{CH}-\mathrm{CH}_{3}+\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O} \stackrel{\mathrm{H}^{+}}{\rightarrow} \mathrm{C}_{2} \mathrm{H}_{5} \mathrm{OH}
