The conversion of  p-nitro phenol from Chlorobenzene takes place in the following steps:

a.   First the chlorine from Chlorobenzene is substituted by reacting with sodium hydroxide with an alcohol group. In this step phenol is formed.

b.   Then performing nitration to this intermediate product (phenol) in presence of concentrated nitric acid and sulphuric acid to form p-nitro phenol.

Chlorobenzene is used to manufacture industrial dyes and related organic compounds, rubber and for dissolving adhesives.
