We can convert chloroethane to propan-1-amine by first using cyanide and further doing nucleophilic substitution. At last the reduction will give us the required product.

Chloroethane is represented as CH_{3}CH_{2}Cl

Propan-1-amine is represented as CH_{3} CH_{2} CH_{2} NH_{2}

  • Reaction with potassium cyanide,

CH_{3} CH_{2} Cl+KCN  →  CH_{3} CH_{2} CN

  • Let us now reduce ethyl cyanide by reacting it with lithium aluminum hydride which is a good reducing agent.

CH_{3} CH_{2} CN+LiAlH_{4}  →  CH_{3} CH_{2} CH_{2} NH_{2}

This is our required product.
