Explanation:

A dc motor with brushes can be run on AC. You could always rectify the AC with a bridge rectifier then feed it to the motor - it will be slightly more efficient. If it is a DC motor with internal electronics (e.g. a 12V DC computer fan) then you MUST use rectification and add a smoothing capacitor!
