C2H5OH+(O)(Alk.KMnO4)→CH3CHO+H2O+CH3CHO+CH3MgCl+HCl→CH3CH(OH)CH3+MgCl2+CH3CH(OH)CH3(O)(alk.KMnO4)→CH3COCH3+H2O(Acetone)

Conversion of ethanol to acetone

  • The chemical formula of compounds involved in the reaction are as follows:
  1. Ethanol: CH_3COOH
  2. Acetone: CH_3-CO-CH_3
  • To convert ethanol or acetic acid to acetone, it must be first treated with calcium hydroxide.
  • As ethanol is acid whereas calcium hydroxide is base, the reaction of them leads to the formation of salt called calcium acetate.
  • The chemical equation involved in the reaction as follows:

CH_3COOH+Ca(OH)_2\rightarrow CH_3-COO-Ca-COO-CH_3

  • When the salt is heated it leads to the elimination of a compound called calcium carbonate from calcium acetate and gives acetone as the end product.
  • The chemical equation involved in the reaction as follows:

CH_3-COO-Ca-COO-CH_3 \stackrel{\Delta}{\rightarrow} CH_3-CO-CH_3
