We cannot convert ethanol directly into ethane-1,2-diol.
We can convert ethanol to ethane -1,2-diol (Glycol) by the following procedure:
- First dehydration of ethanol into ethene is done:
C2H5OH + (conc. H2SO4) + (443 K) → C2H4
- After this, ethene is treated with cold dilute KMnO4 (Baeyer's Reagent) to form ethane- 1,2- diol as follows:
C2H4 + dil. KMnO4 → (HO)H2C-CH2(OH)
