Ethyl acetate also know as Ethyl Ethanoate is an Ester gotten from the reaction between Ethanoic (acetic acid ) and Ethanol through a process called ESTERIFICATION..

Ethanol can under go this process with acetic acid to form ethyl acetate

The overall transformation is:

2 CH3CH2OH + [O] → CH3C(=O)OCH2CH3 + x H2O

The individual steps are first, oxidation of ethanol to acetic acid and this can be done with a variety of reagents such as dichromate ([O]).

CH3CH2OH + [O] → CH3C(=O)-OH + H2O

(where [O] is the oxidant and water necessarily forms).

Then, the second step is an esterification, typically catalyzed by acid:

CH3C(=O)-OH + CH3CH2OH (+ acid catalyst) → CH3C(=O)OCH2CH3 + H2O

Answer: By esterification reaction between ethanol and acetic acid.

Explanation:

  • Esterification is the process by which ethanol is converted into ethyl acetate or ethyl ethanoate.
  • In the process of esterification, an organic acid and an alcohol are combined to produce an ester and water.
  • In the presence of sulphuric acid as a catalyst, ethanol reacts with acetic acid to produce ethyl acetate and water as:  CH_{3}CH_{2} OH + CH_{3} COOH + H_{2} SO_{4}  →  CH_{3}CH_{2}COOCH_{3} + H_{2} O
  • The mechanism of this reaction involves firstly the oxidation of ethanol to acetic acid using oxidizing agent and further the esterification reaction ethanol and acetic acid.
