by elimination
CH3 -CH-OH + H2SO4 ------> CH2 -CH2
Then By hydrogenation
CH2 - CH2 + H2 ---------> CH3 -CH3
Hydrogenation takes place in presence of raney nickel

The conversion of ethyl alcohol to ethane requires the following two steps:

a) Dehydration of ethyl alcohol in presence of an excess of “concentrated Sulphuric acid” at 180 degree Celsius to form an intermediate product ethylene which is an alkene.

b) This intermediate product of ethylene is further treated with hydrogen gas in the presence of catalyst Nickel to give our desired product ethane. Platinum can also be used as a “catalyst”.

Ethyl alcohols is a chemical compound and alcohol with the chemical formula is \bold{\mathrm{C}_{2} \mathrm{H}_{6} \mathrm{O}}.
