By substitution reaction of methane (CH4) with chlorine in the presence of sunlight. When methane reacts with chlorine each hydrogen atom of methane is replaced successively by chlorine atoms. As a result, a mixture of CH3Cl (chloromethane), CH2Cl2 (dichloromethane), CHCl3 (trichloromethane or chloroform) and CCl4 (tetrachloromethane or carbon tetrachloride) is formed.
