The most efficient (in terms of the number of steps)way to do this: Treat Methyl chloride with alcoholic potassium cyanide(KCN) ,this will produce methyl cyanide. On acid hydrolyzing (Distilled water in the presence of any mineral acid) it acetic acid is obtained with the evolution of ammonia gas.
